MEDIA CENTER PC NEWSFebruary 3rd 2005 Napster Launches New Service For Portable Media Centers
The tagline for the $30 million marketing campaign that Napster is about to kick off is 'Do the math', referring to the fact that users of the service will pay $14.95 every month to have access to a library of 1 million tracks instead of paying a flat rate per track as with Apple's iTunes. Unfortunately UK users are 'doing the maths' as the price across the pond will be GBP14.95 every month, almost twice as much as US subscribers. Users will be able to transfer the downloaded tracks in WMA format to a range of portable devices. Five players are supported at launch - Creative Zen Micro MP3 player, iriver H10 MP3 player, iriver Portable Media Centre, Creative Zen Portable Media Centre and Samsung YH999 Portable Media Centre. More compatible devices arre predicted to arrive in 2005. Access to the tracks lasts only as long as the subscription is continued. If the subscription lapses, 30 days later the file is locked by Microsoft's Janus technology. "Napster To Go provides infinitely greater value and is much more exciting than the iTunes pay-per-download model," said Chris Gorog, Napster's chairman and CEO. "This is what consumers want and Napster is once again proud to lead the industry by being the first in the world to offer this revolutionary new way to enjoy music." To use Napster-to-Go you need Napster 3.0 and potentially a firmware upgrade for your player. |
