After yesterday's annoucement from Sony that North America would be getting its hands on the PSP on March 24, Europeans were eagerly awaiting a similar press release from Sony Europe. However, news has emerged that Sony will delay launch until well into the second quarter of 2005.

According to Bloomberg, Sony spokesperson, Kenichi Fukunaga, based in Japan, is reported to have said that the portable console will start selling in Europe only "in the first half of the year".

It seems that Sony could not make enough chips to supply Japanese, North American and European markets in Q1 so, as usual, Europe misses out.

Although we admit that here at MediaCenterPCWorld we've been in danger of becoming a Sony PSP website recently, yesterday's news from the USA showed just how seriously Sony is taking the portable media center capability of their new baby.

The PSP will be sold in a Value Pack, aimed as displaying the console as more than just a gaming machine and the addition of a free UMD version of Spider Man 2 in the first 1 million units shipped, shows that Sony is putting its money where its mouth is.

According to CNN, Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America said "One of the things we've always strived to do was position this as a new portable entertainment device that obviously plays games, but has so much more to offer,"

"We didn't want it to be seen as a competitor to the other handheld gaming devices in the market. We wanted to offer consumers a completely new world, as we did with PlayStation and PlayStation 2. So we looked at what would be the right value proposition to consumers in North America and decided including all these accessories... plus the demo disk and [the ability] to enjoy 'Spider-Man' out of the box was the best value proposition."

Nintendo must be quaking in their boots. If consumers take to the idea that the PSP is a portable entertainment device, not just a game machine, the DS doesn't have the hardware to fight back.
