A website has launched offering short film makers the chance to distribute their work direct to PSP users.

PSPunch!! collects collects works by short filmmakers and offers them for download in the Mpeg-4 format that can play on Sony's new handheld.

Sony is attempting to position the PSP as a portable media center rather than just a games machine. It announced over the weekend that 4 movie titles would be available on UMD (Universal Media Disc) in April and has previously revealed that the initial shipment of PSPs to the USA would include a UMD version of Spider Man 2.

The films on PSPunch!! don't quite have the production values of a Sony-backed feature yet, but you might find some hidden gems. However, at the moment, you'll have to speak Japanese as that's the major language, but site creator David M Shimamoto hopes to host work by artists from other countries soon. He said, "this is a great chance to let my fellow film makers promote their works to 'gamers', a range of viewers who usually do not have a chance to bump in to such creations."

The films are all viewable through Quicktime, even if you don't have a PSP.

PSPunch!! is actively looking for submissions. If you have a film you would like to see hosted on PSPunch!! then you can either upload via FTP, or post a MiniDV tape. Details are available on the website itself.
