Microsoft officially, but quietly, launched MSN Remote Record yesterday, a service for users of XPMCE 2005 that allows you to schedule recordings remotely via the web.

The service is only available in the USA and Canada at the moment, and of course you will need a media center PC that is permenantly connected to the net, as well as a Passport login.

When you first use the service you are asked to enter your Zip code and TV provider (terrestrial, cable and satellite are all catered for) and are shown comprehensive listings for your area.

Scheduling a recording is as easy as clicking on the show link and deciding whether to schedule a single episode, or a whole series. This will send a message over the internet to your PC to set the show to record. If there is a conflict with a previously scheduled recording then you'll be told and asked how you want to resolve it.

Alas, as MediaCenterPCWorld.com is based in the UK, we weren't able to fully test MSN Remote Record, as it hasn't been rolled out beyond the shores of the USA or Canada yet, but what we saw really impressed.

At the very least, the listings are very comprehensize - worth a look even if you don't have XPMCE.

Tellingly, Microsoft say they are reserving the right to charge for the service in the future, but for now it's totally free. If the Redmond-based giant wants to encourage the uptake of XPMCE they should keep it that way.
