It seems that Dell was just trying to keep Intel on its toes. For nearly a year, AMD have thought they were in with a chance of breaking into Dell's massive PC market segment, but Kevin Rollins (Dell CEO) has now ruled that out.

The decision leaves Dell as the only major manufacturer not to use AMD processors in at least one of its lines.

It is possible that Dell was never seriously considering a move towards AMD. Dropping hints to Intel that they might lose their exclusive deal would be a very good way of keeping wholesale prices down.

On the other hand, AMD may be a victim of the delay of a 64 bit version of Windows. For two years, they had the only 64 bit chip on the market, but without support from the most popular OS in the world, Dell could not take advantage. Now Intel have caught up, just in time for 64 bit XP.

However, the door isn't totally shut for AMD. Rollins made it clear that Dell would respond to customer demand, so for now, AMD will jst have to keep on innnovating.
