MEDIA CENTER PC NEWSMarch 11th 2005 Nintendo DS Gets Its UK Launch
The doors were opened at midnight to allow the first customers to buy their DS at the price of £99. This is likely to be a good £50 cheaper than the PSP when it launches (if it launches) so punters weren't put off by the imminent-ish arrival of the PSP in Europe. The DS itself is a dual-screen device with a touch screen. Much has been made of the benefits to the gamer from both these features, but we feel that if anything, it gives the DS great potential as a PDA, or media center. Unfortunately, what lets the DS down is the screen size (it's no good having two screens if they're both small) and its looks. The PSP just appears 'cooler' somehow and this is likely to be reflected in the profile of those buying the consoles. The kids will head for the DS, while the adults will snap up the PSP. Nintendo never planned the DS as anything other than a gaming device, but the arrival of the PSP has forced them into first producing the Play-Yan adapter that allows music and video files to be played on the console and then announcing that they would soon be releasing movies on DS cartridges. For now, the DS gets the headlines, but I suspect that it may all have been different if Sony had chosen today to announce a European launch date for the PSP. Reading back through this article, we haven't redressed the balance, merely nailed our colours to the mast. Roll on PSP day! |
