The Play-Yan, Nintendo's multimedia adapter for the DS and Gameboy Advance, has been patched to allow it to play the MP4 format used by the Sony PSP.

Movie files have to be in a 4:3 ratio, as opposed to the 16:9 ratio used by the PSP, but according to reports on Gamespot, files have been transfered successfully between the two rival devices.

The Play-Yan patch itself is a little hacky. The 278kb file must be placed in the root directory od the SD memory card that contains the video to be played and doesn't actually update the hardware itself. Delete the patch file and the MP4 won't play.

Creating MP4 files can't yet be done by the software that Nintendo bundles with the Play-Yan, but it is expected to be included later in the year.
