The video iPod, long dismissed by Apple as not even featuring on their radar of future products, seems a step closer to becoming reality.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is in talks with music industry big wigs to sell music videos through its iTunes stores. As iTunes is a thinly-veiled tool for shifting iPods it would stand to reason that Apple would want to sell a product capable of playing said videos.

The current iPod obviously can't, so Apple is more than likely planning to add that functionality in the future. The only problem with this lovely rumour is that Steve Jobs has flatly denied that there will ever be an iPod capable of playing feature length movies, but once you've built one to play 3 minute videos, surely it could play anything of a length that its hard drive had the capacity to store.

Back in February we asked the question - will there ever be a movie iPod? Our conclusion was that the day that you see iTunes start to sell video, as well as audio, is the day that the iPod Movie may be getting off the drawing board. We still think that's the case and if the WSJ rumour turns out to be true then we'll find out if we were right.
