There will be increased attention given to networkable consumer electronics devices after the purchase of Danish DVD recorder manufacturer KiSS by Cisco-Linksys.

KiSS have won good reviews for their DVD and HDD recorders. One of the killer features included in their machines is a network port so it can be linked into a home LAN and this makes the marriage of companies an obvious one.

"As more and more entertainment content is delivered over the Internet and as consumers demand access to digital entertainment inside and outside of their home networks, networked entertainment devices will become an integral part of Consumer Electronics," Cisco Systems Inc. president Charles Giancarlo said in a statement.

Linksys will now have access to KiSS' experienced R&D team as well as an instant entry into the European consumer electronics market. They will continue to support and sell KiSS's existing products in Europe. Over time Linksys also plans to develop a suite of targeted products for other world markets.

According to In-Stat, a leading market research firm, the networked entertainment market had reached $3.9 billion in revenue world wide at the end of 2004 and is expected to grow to $16.1 billion by 2009. In-Stat also estimates that networked entertainment devices will be in use on more than 38% of home networks by the same period.
