MEDIA CENTER PC NEWSAugust 30th 2005 Video iPod Speculation Reaches Fever Pitch
Invitations have been sent out to a select group of hacks to a press conference in San Fransisco on September 7, but the content of the conference is unstated. All that Apple is giving away is a teasing throwback to its launch slogan for the original iPod. "1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again." Speculation is rife as to what the announcement will be, with most commentators plumping for either an iTunes compatible phone from Motorola, or arrival of the long-awaited video iPod. The phone is old news, with only a few details left to reveal, so it seems unlikely that Apple would bother to whip up such a press storm for fear of anti-climax. The video iPod would be far from an anti-climax, but Apple have often stated that they feel the market for portable video is not mature enough for them to bother dipping in a toe. However, we have previously reported that Apple is in talks with music industry big wigs to sell music videos through its iTunes stores. As iTunes is a thinly-veiled tool for shifting iPods it would stand to reason that Apple would want to sell a product capable of playing said videos. Whatever the real content of the press conference, Apple have again proved themselves masters of spin and a solid future (patent problems notwithstanding) looks assured. |
