Synaptics, a developer of interface solutions for mobile computing, has announced the first implementation of the Dual Mode TouchPad module and a new design for its ScrollRing interface in a remote control, both shipping with the new Medion MD 96500 notebook computer.

Why is this of interest to the Media Center PC enthusiast we hear you asking?

The custom-designed Dual Mode TouchPad solution transforms the Synaptics laptop TouchPad from a navigation device to a media control center with the touch of a button. In default navigation mode, the TouchPad provides cursor navigation. When the dual mode button is engaged blue LEDs illuminate application icons and controls on the pad. The illuminated interface offers multimedia controls, including volume, play/pause, stop, previous, next and mute, and also application launch buttons for Internet Explorer, search, mail, and media player. To switch from cursor mode to media mode, users tap on the upper right tap zone on the TouchPad module.

The Medion MD96500 also ships with a remote control, allowing users to remotely access television or multimedia files, such as music and movies. Synaptics' ScrollRing serves as the primary interface for the remote control offering intuitive on-screen navigation.

"The Medion MD96500 is an exciting example of how Synaptics technology can be customized to add valuable features and improve the multimedia experience," explains Don Kirby, Synaptics' General Manager of PC Products. "By combining our innovation with our experience in customization and module design, we provided Medion with a compelling and unique interface solution."

"The Medion MD 96500 selected the Dual Mode TouchPad and ScrollRing interfaces to provide our customers with easy and accessible multimedia controls," explained Mark Jendrzok, Medion Product Manager. "The Synaptics interface is not only intuitive, but it provides valuable functionality to the user."

The Medion MD 96500 notebook computer is currently available in retail stores in Europe.
