Based on the assumption that currently 80 percent of all portable digital TV-on-laptop devices require the use of a large roof top antenna for adequate TV reception, DiBcom has demonstrated portable PC TV solution on a laptop incorporating a combination of 2 antennas.

Antenna Diversity, as the system is known, is already used in automotive applications for mobile digital terrestrial TV reception using a combination of multiple antennas to optimise signal reception. It has proven to enable the best indoor reception providing up to 11 dB gain (versus single antenna reception) in European countries for portable reception.

Similar to the Wi-fi embedded antenna concept, implementation and experience, the use of diversity was also adopted for portable PC TV reception in order to offer the best quality signal reception and to extend the area of reception. This includes poor signal/noisy areas, such as apartments or shielded buildings, without the need for fixed roof-top antennas.

This proof of concept, as presented during CES 2006, is based on Mini-Card technology combining the DIB7000 and DIB7700 chips coupled with two integrated/external antennas, thereby allowing customers to optimize Digital TV reception for both indoor and outdoor mobile usage.

In addition to providing excellent digital TV reception, this application also supports a combination hybrid analog/digital mode of reception.

"With an increasingly mobile lifestyle, consumers want to get more of their entertainment wherever they happen to be," said Karen Regis, director of marketing programs for Intel's Mobile Platforms Group. "Working with Intel, DiBcom is continuing to drive innovative new technologies that enable a better mobile TV experience on Intel Centrino Duo-based laptops and Intel XScale technology-based handheld devices."

"The PCTV market is growing rapidly and is very demanding in terms of size, power and price. With the DIB7700 and DIB7710, we now have the most advanced solution on the market where there is a growing demand for mobile TV solutions on PC. While mobile TV is now becoming more and more well known with the emergence of DVB-H where DiBcom has been the pioneer, business is being done now with our commercially available low cost, high performance single and now Diversity DVB-T solution," states Yannick Levy, President and CEO of DiBcom.
