As has been well-documented , media center functionality comes as standard with many of the product editions, but be careful which one you go for as the wrong choice could mean a cut-down OS. The cheapest package is so basic that Microsoft hasn't even seen fit to grant it the name 'Vista'. Windows Starter 2007 doesn't use the Aero graphics engine that will make Vista unique, so is probably aimed at the developing world. Don't even think about this one if you want media center features. Windows Vista Home Basic is aimed at the EU market and doesn't include Media Player because of the anti-competitive ruling against Microsoft that forces a version without the bundled software. No media player = no media center, so again, avoid this one like the plague. Now we get onto the good stuff. Windows Vista Home Premium contains all the media center goodness you need, including extender functionality. This is the edition that you will see bundled with media center hardware. There are a couple of business editions and then the daddy of all operating systems - Windows Vista Ultimate. This OS will contain everything from Home Premium as well as the business editions.
